"Over a number of sessions your dog will start to respond by running to their bed with you. Repeat this process several times during one session but keep sessions short and fun. When this happens, encourage your dog to run to their bed - ideally placed in a room where visitors wouldn't enter - and reward them there by dropping a handful of treats onto their bed. Tasmin suggests: "Have your helper approach and knock/ring again. We want these to become meaningless as they no longer result in anyone coming in at all."ĬBCK-Christine // Getty Images 3. "Gradually increase the number and volume of the knocks/rings until your dog is ignoring them completely. "Start by having the helper knock or ring just once and throw your dog a treat reward once they're quiet and calm. The next approach is to get someone to knock or ring your front door whilst you keep your dog inside the house. As your dog hears the knock, scatter some treats down for them to find, as they can't sniff, eat and bark at the same time! Gradually increase the volume until your dog is ignoring reasonably loud knocks and doorbells and ready to search for treats instead of barking and running to the door." 2. Tasmin tells us: "If your dog shows a strong reaction, for example barking or rushing to the door, then make the sound quieter. In order to help your dog not react to the sound of a door knock, start gradually by knocking on other surfaces around the house. "Lots of dogs get nervous or excited when they hear someone approaching the door, the sound of the doorbell or a knock at the door," says Tamsin. To help, we spoke to Tamsin Durston, Dogs Trust Canine Behaviour Officer, to ask her for tips on how to stop a dog being aggressive when someone approaches the front door. While our four-legged friends are inquisitive when it comes to new visitors arriving, it's important we teach them to react positively when the doorbell rings - and to respect those delivering post and parcels. Last week, a High Court judge ruled that dog owners will now be criminally liable and could face up to five years in prison if their dog attacks postal workers delivering mail.
